Tuhina Das: Working with Aparna Sen is like being part of an institution, says Ghawre Bairey Aaj actress
Tuhina Das plays Brinda, the female protagonist in Aparna Sen’s Ghawre Bairey Aaj. The film also stars Jisshu Sengupta and Anirban Bhattacharya
The journey to become Brinda from Tuhina Das was a long and exciting one. “It was a two and a half months’ journey, to be exact,” recounts the dusky beauty. She adds, “I first met Rinadi (Aparna Sen) at the audition. I was nervous and excited.” Tuhina’s nervousness and excitement are understandable, given the link between Satyajit Ray’s iconic 1985 release Ghare Baire, and Aparna Sen’s Ghawre Bairey Aaj. Brinda, the character played by Tuhina Das, was Bimala in Ray’s classic film. It was memorably played by veteran actress Swatilekha Sengupta.
“The combination of a character like Brinda and a director like Aparna Sen is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” says Tuhina Das. She is quick to point out the differences between Ghare Baire and Ghawre Bairey Aaj. “Our film is rooted in the present. It is set against a very different backdrop. The treatment of the two directors are also very different,” explains Tuhina. She adds, “I have tried to make Brinda an original character, with no influence of Bimala. In fact from the day I knew I was playing Brinda, I didn’t watch Ray’s Ghare Baire at all. I just followed Rinadi’s script and followed my instincts.”
Tuhina Das is excited about her first film as a protagonist, and also about working with Aparna Sen. She says, “Working with Rinadi is like being part of an institution. She is very particular about each aspect of her film. She prepares the actors almost like a teacher preps his students. I am very excited about this film.”
Ghawre Bairey Aaj also stars Jisshu Sengupta and Anirban Bhattacharya. It releases on 15th November.
